There was much speculation that Jimmy Johnson would return to coaching during the first year of the program's run. But in 1996, he left the program to become head coach of the Miami Dolphins; Ronnie Lott was brought in to succeed him, and stayed with the program for two seasons.

With each team receiving only one piece of the challenge map, they must track down the others and combine pieces to rescue themselves from the island on Day 35.
